sydney Powell-Week 3 analysis

my initial response to reading the Zong! and Enwezor reading were confusion and an inability to collect my thoughts and make connections. The poems were seemed to be all over the place in a way I couldn't understand and the Enwezor reading only furthered my lack of understanding of what the two texts were saying. Going through the text again I came to accept the lack of organization and obvious connection and started to piece together my own understanding which I believe based on how a words meaning depends on the other words surrounding it. In the Zong! reading I was able to so how on a visual level the author was able to use the spacing between words to evoke different ideas and meanings, relying heavily on the the word's interaction on the paper to create their own meaning.I think the use of the spacing became the most clear to me in the way that read Zong! #18 and how it has a visual cause and effect set up. I imagined a zig zagging slide where each words gets pushed starts rolling then bumps in the next words, which then bumps into the next words causing a never ending cause and effect association. I feel like each word in context with the next one in line make their own sense and you understand how they would relate to each other. The lines "voyage means market means slaves means more means dead means want water means water" stood out to me cause the seemed to connect to each other in a very literal way. Using the reading from Enwezor I furthered my understanding of the power of association and how connection can work to make new meanings. The quote "could a black artist describe a black painting in the following way without being taken for a fool" by Darby English stood out to me because it describes a social association between black artist and black art that has been made on social level for many years. Where white heterosexual man are able to make more distant comments in relation to black artist and black male artist would probably feel a social pressure to find a cultural meaning and connection the art.
From the two readings I took away the importance of association and how we can make new associations depending on the displayed connections. I decided to create a new association with my schedule on a busy day verses a relaxed day and how placement of words creates the association I recreated my Wednesday and Thursday schedule to show a visual representation of how I feel during the day and the events in relation to each other. Wednesday I have no class and all I do is work and study so its much more laid back and controlled. I added less writing cause the day itself is more open to change but built on a very basic layout of a few things I would need to get done. in contrast my Thursday schedule is long and full of things to do that make it feel more hectic. I have three classes on 2 different campuses so the entire day becomes be trying to get from one to the next and getting through each class. I also typed out the words in a very crazy way because thats how the days feels, I seem to have less control but must try to follow a tight schedule if I want the day to run smoothly. I made it messy to show how my brain feels on those types of days and created distance between each class since they feel extra far apart on a busy day. through typing out what i usually do on each day i was able to visual show how my schedule feels in the same 24 hour slot that I use and how spacing can create new associations between words.
