Throughout Enwezor reading I felt as if he was speaking to
me directly. I am responding to when he describes that he is more than just an
artist and his artwork is more than just art. It is a story, it is his culture
and it is him doing more than just him letting your mind run free. Enwezor
wants to make sure that others understand his work on a deeper level. He
mentions in the beginning that he feels like he is not doing enough and that
spoke to me because in college, especially those who are the first to graduate
from college in the family, feel as if they aren't doing enough for their
family. There's always a way to better yourself but with everything that we do
we are not satisfied with just being “good enough”.
I decided to write my story through a poem. At the beginning
of the poem you will notice that I have some form of routine going on but you
don't know what exactly it is that I am talking about. I also choose a poem
because just like Enwezor paintings the first thing you do is look over it and
try to understand it before fully thinking about the actual story. This relates
to my hair, the topic in the poem, and how people only see it but don't know
the story behind it. No one ever questions it because it is something that has
been attached to me since I was young. When looking at a painting people
usually just look at the colors and shapes but I’m pretty sure the painter saw
more than just that and by the end of the poem you see me branching out of what
people define as me because I am more than just my hair.
I choose to speak about my hair because it is what people
usually see before my face. I feel like my hair is what makes me stand out to
others. The main limitation about this piece is that it doesn't say the word
“hair” but it allows others to become more curious about what I am referring
to. This is like Enwezor paintings. Although his work stands out and is telling
a story, from my perspective I still want to know more and hopefully by the end
of the poem people question the story behind my hair and know that I am more
than just it.
In the beginning of the poem, I want people to feel as if
they are exercising or running out of breath because this is what it feels like
to untangle my hair. Many people are curious to know the process on how I
manage it and this is pretty much how it goes.
Through this response I learned that no matter what I do in
life I am always going to want to do more. Like Enwezor, I want others to
understand my story, I want to be different than those around me but be known
for that difference. I learned that when we set goals and reach them we are
still going to want to be better. Bettering yourself is a never ending lifelong
process
