Jennifer Dyke week 3 response

The theme I chose to respond to was the theme of race and gender in Enwezor reading. The concern most prevailing was the question posed of Legion's "superior" post-modern artwork: "To what is his work superior? Is it among contemporary art or black artists speficially?". This influenced me to explore the pros/cons of analyzing one's work in any field based on the creator's racial identity (unless of course it is the creator's intention) which in Legion's case was not very clear to me.

The process I used to create my response was to internalize my own identity, specifically in the ways that gender has impacted my life, especially in the education I have recieved. After reading the prompt and Zhong! I utimately made the decision to respond in the form of free verse poetry.

I chose free verse poetry because it allowed me the freedom to express my feeling without the limitation that metered and established types of poetry do. Perhaps for this purpose I may have spread the words across the page, but I chose not to because I think it makes it too difficult to read and creates a sort of emotion that I did not want the poem to have. I wanted it to be readable and straightforward so the reader would understand my sincerity on the topic.

One of the choices I made when writing this poem was to open and close with the same line which is to be read in a sacaristic tone. I think the reader will recognize this by the end of the poem. I used a dark tone in the middle which illustrates the frustration I have on the topic.

One thing I learned from completing this assignment is that even outside of a gender studies class, it is envitable to run across the hot topic of identity politics. I'm really pleased with the outcome of my poem, especially that I just let myself write freely and not take the assignment so objectively.
