Jennifer Dyke week 3 response

Great, Another Assignment on Identity Politics!
Stop asking me about the intersections on which I reside
Stop putting me in boxes in your narrow, compartmentalized mind
Reveling in the fact that a “woman” could be so smart
Assuming my “whiteness” has covered for my downfalls
Undress me with your eyes and educate me in patriarchy
Why can’t we just end it at “He has great art?"
Instead of adding “For a black man”

Look at my certificate
It might as well be stamped with a black mark
Or pink that screams “Girl”
Destining me to a life
Where my creations will not end
With “Great”
But Great for a “Woman”

"It's a girl!" read the announcement
My parents so happy with their pink bundle
The thought never crossed their minds
That perhaps I would become a doctor
Or a lawyer or an important buisnessman
That was my brother's job
I would wear pink bows
And play with barbies
And become a teacher or a nurse
Never "man" enough to have bigger dreams
But Great for a "Woman"

Great, Another Assignment on Identity Politics!
