This was the last email that I have sent to my pen pal, Nuree from Thailand, until I lost contact with her around 2013. Although we only communicated through email, and the conversations were fairly simple and mundane, it showed not only a lot about me and my relationship with her. I started emailing her around 2008 through my 6th grade Science teacher, and would receive an email every year or two. As I read through the emails, I found that I almost used her as a checkpoint in how I am doing with my life. When first reading, it may seem like a simple letter, when in fact, I was growing up—from a 6th grader to an 11th grader, facing new troubles, and learning new things. I said in my email, that she also handwritten me a letter also in Chinese (thinking I may be Chinese) back in 2008, but I was able to understand and read it in 2013. She was an eleventh grader in 2008, and it was as though we were close age friends when I read her later, because I was an eleventh grader in 2013, although in reality we were many years apart. Her past struggles is, in an essence, my present struggles. I dissected my email, like in the reading, Zong, to give a sense of how Nuree and I were similar in many ways.
I'm fine. I am so sorry for didn't contact you. I lose your email address sine graduate from my boarding school and came back to my home. I just discover it last week. I think you may change your email and I uncertain to sent email to you. I glan to write letters to you again. Now I am studying Doctor of optometry program in Ramkhamhang university. It about your eyes and your glasses ha ha ha. What are you studying now? What grade are you studying?
Dear Nuree,
It was really nice hearing from you again! I am now in the 11th grade, studying hard to prepare myself for college. So right now I am studying for major tests that I will have to take in order to go to a good college. But it is very stressful and I can understand how you feel about wanting to sleep and watch TV! :D I was cleaning out my room a few weeks ago and found your letter again in a folder that I kept in my closet. You wrote in Chinese, asking me if I was Chinese :D (I can read it now! Yay for me!) I have been learning Chinese for about two years now and it is a beautiful language. Hopefully I can visit Asia one day.
I slept for about an hour today and I feel a little better. (You should always make time to take a nap!) Are you still in Ramkhamhang University? How is it there?
Ellen
