Ellen Lee: Week 2 Analysis

The reading started by contrasting repetition with generality. Afterwards, the reading further explains that "to repeat is to behave in a certain manner, but in relation to something unique or singular which has no equal or equivalent." Immediately, I thought of Pop Art, which I thought described the concept of "repetition." Clearly, Pop Art pushes the limit of repetition. I felt like this art (including the color, format, mood, and image) described how repetition in a way, depends on difference. When looking at this photo, repetition of design, shape, format, and color is overt, but the subtle differences is what makes the repetition "unique." Although I did not create this artwork myself, I chose this because of the sharp contrast between bright colors and the repetition of shapes and the image of Marilyn Monroe. The repetition of the image juxtaposes the subtle differences of shapes and colors, which demonstrates the unique relationship between repetition and difference.
