Sydney Powell week 6 -analysis

My original response to Maggie Nelson was to talk about the musical Rent and my interaction with it as I’ve grown up and my own views have changed. In response I made a comparison of the cleaning process of clay and plaster to the themes shown in the musical Rent. I currently take a sculpture class so I was working on my piece of work when I thought of recording myself taking pieces of dried plaster out of clay and show that cleaning process to the tune La Vie Boheme. I put these two ideas together because it's the part in the musical where all the characters characteristics and aspects in their life comes out all at once in one big act. It kinda brings all the issues they are dealing with and how many things make up their personalities. I compared that to the process of cleaning clay and how its long and messy and it gets all over the place. Me taking out piece of the hidden clay reminded me of how they are singing and putting all their flaws and joys out in public to be seen, visible and subject to criticism even if that's their true nature.I then compared the process of cleaning all the clay of my hand to the Seasons of Love cause it shows how no matter how filthy and dirty it all feels you can find away to wash it off. Where clay can be washed away with water the character's flaw and problems becoming washed away by the love they have for each other.
Not having a reading for this week helped me come up with a comparison idea because the idea came from something I do in my daily life that felt minimal but when compared to the musical created a new meaning. I think the clay process showed a visual representation of what the songs represented and it was nice to put actions to the music. It's just me cleaning but in the context of the music it brings out the emotions of struggle and relief as I got through the entire process of cleaning plaster and clay. I was nice to give cleaning, something I see as annoying and time consuming and turn into almost a performance piece. I think the assignment showed me how I can connect new meanings to something that doesn't stand out in my everyday life and make new connections.
