The themes presented in the reading I am responding to
is the author’s perspective of color. To Nelson, color can do many things including
express emotions, aide her to feel a certain way and create associations with
objects and people. I specifically responded to her feelings about the man in
the blue shirt and how their relationship was very much intertwined with the
color blue.
I formulated my response by thinking about color and
what it means to me. I tried to tie in my favorite color into my everyday
actions and good/bad feelings that came over me. Then I listened to sounds and
tried to link them with the way I was feeling about a particular object or
person. I was must concerned with making a meaningful connection through my
audio that would make the listener think abstractly.
I chose these materials because I didn’t believe I
could create the same reaction with just writing. I think the combination of
writing and audio creates a different experience and is more pleasing for the
audience. I think it allows for imagination to run wild and for the
listener/reader to piece together a picture in their head. Nelson shows us color
is multi-sensory and we don’t just see it, so I wanted to incorporate multi-media
for this reason.
I chose to make the tone a little dark, hoping to
convey a sad or melancholy emotion. The laugh in the audio was accidental but
turned out perfectly, it sounded cynical and dark which went along perfectly
with my intentions. My choices were driven mostly by emotion. I ultimately
tried to create the same feeling I got from reading Bluets, but with my own
take on color.
From this assignment I learned the importance of the
human sensory experience. I think we often times take for granted our ability
to see with our eyes. I now think of blind people and am more sympathetic
because life with color or light would lose its luster. I also think it’s
really hard to explain color in words to someone who has never seen color
before or even someone who has. It was hard for me to put to words the
sensations and sounds I associated with color.
