Purple
The splotches on the wall
From the sample containers
Thousands of paint swatches
Litter my bedroom floor
I can’t decide which hue matches my insides
“But it will make your room feel smaller”
Small and isolated like my soul
Just what I was going for
The sensation of nothingness
Crawling out of bed when the world is still asleep
White noise like music to my ears
The blistering water trickling down my spine
I can’t help but laugh
Because they don’t know what purple feels like
Purple feels like:
Coming home after a long day
And curling up in nothing but
My favorite bathrobe
It’s plush playing with my skin
The purring of my feline companion
On my purple painted toenails
Peeping out of my purple slippers
But what more is purple
Than a mixture of red and blue
But purple is so much more
Than the sum of red and blue
Red, The color
of love and hearts
And Valentine cards
I’ve never been the romantic type
And Blue never did me any favors
It’s everyone’s favorite color
And I’m not one to go along with the crowd
When I saw you across the room wearing that purple
shirt
My girlfriend said you looked like “Barney”
But I knew you were the one for me
Until I laid restless in bed that night
Staring at the splotches on the wall
And it was then I knew that:
I could never commit to purple
